Could Oakwood Theme Park be saved? All we know about revive.wales

A few months ago Oakwood Theme Park’s owners announced it would not be opening for 2025 and with drone footage showing many rides being removed it looks like Aspro Parks actually have no intention of ever re-opening Oakwood.

But, a couple of months ago revive.wales was launched with a group of unknown investors led by a family team looking to bring Oakwood back to life.

In this blog I’ll share everything I know about revive.wales and whether we could see Oakwood reborn which would mean saving Megaphobia, the wooden coaster which is widely accepted as the UK’s best woodie!

Are revive.wales serious?

Whilst revive.wales aren’t detailing their funding or backers they have managed to submit a proposal to Aspro Parks who currently own Oakwood Theme Park. The latest news, as of the 29th May 2025 was that they have sent a catch-up email and are ready to engage into formal engagement. From their latest press information (also posted in May 2025) they are waiting to see if they can go ahead with their plans based on whether Aspro will actually allow them to move forward with these proposals.

However, it sounds like revive are serious!

What would they do with Oakwood Theme Park?

With the park in it’s current derelict condition with rides removed or dismantled this isn’t just a case of reopening a closed park but requires revival.

In their vision Revive Wales outline that they want to:

Start from the ground up

Once Aspro agree to let them take over they will lay the groundwork, engaging with stakeholders, have site-wide surveys done and assess the existing infrastructure. Revive Wales’ state that their key priority is ensuring everything is community focused, safe and buildable.

Improve infrastructure

Their second phase is about restoring transport access, adding new utility lines, improving internal roads and paths and sorting out operation centres and staff facilities, hiring key members of staff at this time.

Ride revival

Of course, Oakwood needs rides and at stage 3 Revive will be restoring or replacing legacy rides and introducing new attractions that can be adapted to new themes.

One of the park’s focuses on accessibility and safety throughout which is great to hear and use of the word ‘themed’ suggests we’re talking about a theme park not an amusement park here.

Reopening!

At this point the vision is for Oakwood to return with 20+ attractions, immersive themed areas, diverse food outlets, inclusive guest services and bilingual signs.

Revive Wales talk about wanting to focus on STEM for educational groups, families and thrill seekers.

Continued growth

Beyond this Revive want to continue to grow the park, work towards net-zero, improve visibility of the Welsh language and encourage youth learning and development.

My thoughts

The vision of Revive to build-back-better with a focus on accessibility and education is fantastic and their plan makes all the right points however, the key points are going to be around whether Aspro will actually give up the land and how much Revive’s financial backers can actually put in.

I hope we’ll have some more news in the coming months and it would be great to see this park re-open in the next few years.
